Multi-Wood Blanket Chest

I received an inspiring pointer from @furnituregirl on Big Beautiful Boxes: Blanket Chests and decided to make one for my wife as we approach our 20 year mark of marriage.

In the spirit of the early American tradition, it’s sturdy construction and I suspect my grand kids will be using it one day.  Primarily oak with white maple, the stripes are the purple heart that I use in many of my wood turnings.  It is finished with many coats of a tongue oil-poly mixture and the bottom is lined with unfinished cedar to deter bugs.

I realized when talking to some folks the other day that not everyone knows what a “blanket chest” actually is.  My grandmother and earlier generations used to make quilts by hand and assemble them as a team. The red one on the right was made by my great-grandmother, well over 100 years old now, and is an amazing work of art.

“Blanket Chests” are designed to sit at the foot of the bed and store your valuable quilts for generations.  On a cold winters night, you don’t have far to go add a layer of comfort.
